Check Out The Uses Of HR Sheet Grades With Raunaq Steels

April 13, 2023

The method of hot rolling is one of the most essential processes for it develops a different kind of steel that is highly functional. The formation of HR steel starts with a metalworking process where the metal is heated at a temperature that is above the recrystallization temperature. This helps to deform the steel into any operating product that is to be further required in different industries.

The purpose of HR steel is to be used as a raw material that can be easily transformed into different dimensions. They are even passed through a rolling process which gives them the perfect shape and thickness, reducing the cross-sectional area. These are then turned into plates, sheets, coils, beam frames, etc.

The initial grain structure of the metal is not very uniform and contains a huge number of columnar grains. These keep on growing towards the direction of solidification. At their initial stage, these are brittle and weak and can contain many defects like shrinkage, cavities, metallic oxides, etc. This is where the hot-rolling process comes in. It destroys all the grain structures and helps in developing new formations and, stronger boundaries. These formations will have uniform grains and help in the production of HR sheet grades, coils, beams, etc.

Production of blooms and slabs requires an elevated temperature flow through the continuous casting process. However, for smaller operations, the best steel companies in India start the production at room temperature and are continuously heated in a soaking pit or added heat before it is fed into the mill.

The process of Hot rolling improves:

  • Strength, toughness, and ductility

  • Formability

  • Weldability

  • Resistant to shock and vibration

Mostly, the pre-engineered building manufacturers in India classify hot-rolled steel products into four groups. These include- Flat, Seamless, Long, and Speciality. These products are used for separate applications like building automotive structural parts, machine structures like saws and springs, guard rails, metal buildings, and agricultural equipment.

The hot-rolled steel is then followed by the cold-rolling process where the steel starts to cool at room temperature. This helps in the formation of precise shapes that are highly desirable for providing aesthetics for different shapes like round, flat, square, and other variations thereof.

Although there are different forms of hot-rolled steel, we shall be speaking about the different HR sheet grades and their usage in particular.

HR sheet grades: Types and its uses

In India, the grades of HR sheets are identified based on the prefix IS (Indian Standardization). Let’s take a look at some of the most common grades.

  1. IS 1079: This low-carbon steel grade is provided with micro-alloying elements like Titanium, Boron, Vanadium, and Niobium. But, the percentage of these elements does not exceed more than 0.20% (except for boron which exceeds 0.8%). It has a maximum carbon content of 0.15% and is commonly used by pre-engineered building manufacturers in India in general engineering applications, like the fabrication of components, machine parts, and structural components.

  2. IS 2062: This sheet grade contains a total carbon content of 0.25%. This is highly suitable for the welding process and contains micro-alloying elements as well. These are also used in the construction industry for the production of beams, columns, and other components that provide structure to the building.

  3. IS 10748: The best steel companies in India manufacture this steel grade due to its high toughness and strength. It contains micro-elements Vanadium, Titanium, and Niobium but the total content should not exceed 0.20%. For products like axles, gears, and crankshafts, these are the perfect grade.

Besides this, there are also other HR sheet grades. Here is a list of them along with the applications they are used in.

  • IS 6240: This is used in domestic or auto LPG cylinders

  • IS 5986: This is used in the manufacturing of poles and other flanging applications

  • IS11513: This is used in the industries as a cold-reducing segment

The HR sheets are one of a kind and are highly suitable for being used in different industrial sectors. However, before choosing the right grade, it is important to make a checklist of the actions that will be requiring them. This will help to filter the choices and make the right decision.
